Every group has its own vocabulary. Some people say that learning the terminology of a new discipline is the major effort in mastering a new discipline.
The same can be said for style manuals. There are style manuals for business, science, and medicine. Even journalists have their own style manual. So it seems logical for the intelligence community, considering the amount of writing it produces, to have its own style manual to improve the clarity of its work. To that end, the Central Intelligence Agency produced it own style manual. It has refined it by producing numerous versions leading up to this, its sixth edition. We think you’ll agree that it accomplishes the purpose of style manuals, which in the end, is clarity of thought.
The CIA’s Manual of Style offers a good example of its clarity of explanation in describing how to use the word “only.” Anchor only carefully to ensure that your meaning is clearly conveyed.
Examples
¥ Only he attended the meeting. (The others did not show up.)
¥ He only attended the meeting. (He did not make a speech.)
¥ He attended only the meeting. (He skipped the Happy Hour.)
We believe youÕll agree that you can never get enough helpful hints on how to make your writing say more in less space. The CIAÕs Style Manual for Intelligence Publications will make an excellent addition to your reference book collection.
